WHAT IS 3G?

3G stands for the third generation of wireless communication technology as it is in the ITU specification (the first generation was analogue cellular and the second one was digital PCS). A 3G device provides an increased bandwidth up to 384 Kbps while standing or walking, to 128 Kbps in car, and 2 Mbps in fixed applications. 3G works on wireless interfaces of GSM, TDMA and CDMA. The new EDGE air interface was developed especially to meet bandwidth needs of 3G.

WHAT DOES SERIES 60 PLATFORM MEANS?

The Series 60 Platform is a software platform for mobile phones that comprises all software, user interface (UI) and applications needed to create a smart phone. It is developed to run on Symbian operation system and is licensed as a resource code. Series 60 Platform makes difference and creativity in other licensed ones. Furthermore, it provides a common software platform, cooperation among different licensed smart phones and application compliance. Series 60 Platform is currently the most intuitive and powerful user interface in a mobile device. It converts complex applications to easy to use phone properties effectively. Applications are integrated to each other attentively so that the users can create and send multimedia messages or do similar operations by stroking keys of minimum number whenever they are in the menu structure. Series 60 provides users a more effective personal knowledge management, reliable access to vital business information, and synchronization in an e-mail messaging, calendar programming and using of PC applications. Information technology and mobile industries have come to an agreement on three types of mobile solutions that are to be made common in a short time. The first one is for horizontal operations in which all employees may benefit, such as e-mail and programming. The second one is for vertical operations that are designed for sales persons, area engineers and delivery personnel. The third one is for mobile extents related to management of customer relations, planning of business resources, and other applications based on core business processes. Series 60 helps its consumers discover some entertainment and media properties such as multimedia messaging, movie player, rich and colorful scanning and interesting games, and provides them more than one service such as e-mail loading and sending a lot of multimedia messages at the same time. Series 60 also provides its users ability to control some properties of the device via voice command. New multimedia presentation option offers synchronized voice, imaging and depiction to the users, as a pleasant experience.

HOW DOES MOBILE VIDEO WORK?

You may play movies, record movies and even make your own movies and send them to your friends by using mobile video services. There are two kinds of mobile videos; downloadable content and streaming content. Downloadable videos are short film fragments, which can be stored in the memory of your phone. MMS video messages are recorded in the same way. Streaming content works as if it is a television broadcast; the mobile phone acts as a monitor unit, but there is no record loaded to the memory. Streaming is a great technology for longer contents. Thanks to streaming, you may watch the multimedia content without downloading whole file. The latest news, your favorite songs, sport news and even live broadcasts may be in your hands.

WHAT IS EDGE?

An acronym stands for Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution. Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution-EDGE is a complementary 3G technology similar to UMTS; when used together; these technologies may meet the requirement for 3G network capacity that the operator needs to fulfill the traffic increase. Both technologies support the similar applications which provide the end user transparency, while reducing the need for development and integration operations to a great extent. Present GSM/GPRS networks which are supported by EDGE technique can be enhanced to correlate with third generation cell phone services that have 384 kbit/sec data transmission rate, and provide three-fold improved efficiency in frequency bandwidth for data transmission.

WHAT IS MMS?

One of the latest developments in mobile message sending and receiving is known as Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). As it is in conventional short message service, Multimedia Messaging Service delivers the personal messages automatically and instantly; however, it differs from SMS with its properties of adding video, voice or image contents to messages. Hence, it is possible to make a personal message a visual communication through special effects and rich contents. Moreover, MMS technology offers more than enhanced message content. Besides sending MMS message from a mobile phone to other one, thanks to its state of the art structure, it is possible to send messages from a mobile phone to an e-mail address, and vice versa. This feature increases the ability of mobile communication both in personal use and institutional use to a great extent. The MMS standard has listed the formats of JPEG, GIF, text and AMR voice and other formats as the supported media types; and unsupported ones are dealt with in a controlled fashion. Similar to SMS, MMS is an open industrial standard and can be transmitted using the currently active networks and protocols. In addition, MMS is connected to the carrier, which means that it is not limited to GSMS or WCDMA networks.

WHAT IS BLUETOOTH?

New Bluetooth technology, which provides wireless connectivity, cuts the wires connecting digital devices. Bluetooth based on a short-range and low-cost wireless link, connects several devices to each other without any cable visibly, and gives you the freedom to wander easily. This is the freedom of movement that we mentioned. It is necessary to approximate two devices, which are equipped with Bluetooth in a position about 10 meters away from each other to establish a Bluetooth connection. Since the Bluetooth uses a wireless-based connection, it does not need a line of vision connection to establish a communication. Your computer can send the information to the printer in the adjoining room, or you can use your mobile phone to control the alarm system fitted to your home. Bluetooth has become a global standard for the wireless connectivity. In the future, it is possible to combine Bluetooth, as a standard device, with ten millions of cell phones, PCs, laptops and other electronic units. Consequently, the market will demand new applications, value-added services and end to end solutions. Abilities given by Bluetooth’s wireless connectivity are unlimited in practice. Furthermore, since the current wireless frequency is used globally, Bluetooth can provide fast and reliable access to wireless networks all over the world. So, it will not be surprising to see that the Bluetooth becomes one of the fastest acceptable technologies, with such potential, in the history.

WHAT DOES GPRS STAND FOR?

GPRS is an acronym for “General Packet Radio Service” and uses the network of GSM; however, it transmits data as a package over one or more channels. Advantages: Data rate increases from 9.6 kilobit/sec to 160 kilobit/sec that is 2.5 times more than that of a single ISDN connection. Moreover, the capacity of the line is only used when the data streams actually. This economical use means that GPRS customers will only pay for the times, whenever they transfer data, even though they are online all day.
General Packet Radio Service-GPRS is a step between GSM and 3G cellular networks. GPRS offers more rapid data transfer in the range of 9.6Kbit - 115Kbit with the GSM network. The new technology enables the users to make a telephone conversation and data transfer at the same time. For example, if you have a cell phone which uses GPRS, you will be able to make a phone conversation while you are receiving e-mail messages. The prominent benefits of GPRS are to allocate wireless resources only when there is a data to be transmitted, and to diminish dependency to conventional network items, which are opened via a circuit.

HOW DOES SMS WORK?

Sending short messages (known as SMS) by cell phones through a mobile wireless network is one the data transfer methods. Text message characters are used in that kind of communication, and a message is limited to maximum 160 characters. Unlike telephone communication, there is no connection between the sender and the receiver of the SMS. An SMS is sent to a center (SMSC, Short Message Service Center) and the message is reached by the receiver when he/she opens the cell phone. For not drowning in the data pool of the Service Center, it is determined a function period for each SMS to be read, and if a message is not received within that period, it is deleted.

WHAT IS MOBILE COMMUNICATION?

Mobil communication is to communicate through cell phones. The needed infrastructure for this is the wireless network comprising base stations in a sufficient number. These stations act both as a receiver and a transmitter. They send incoming calls to the mobile phone, and resend the outgoing calls from the mobile phone to the wireless network. Since the coverage of cell phones is limited to a few kilometers, it is necessary to establish many base stations to enlarge the coverage. The first mobile wireless networks were analogue (Networks A, B and C). However, since it was very hard to send and receive analogue signals, telephones at that period were heavy and awkward. Therefore, car phones were used previously. With the Networks D and E, mobile phones were getting smaller, and reached the current sizes, which are suitable to carry in the pocket. Another factor is the transformation to digital technology that broadened the use area of mobile networks. There is an increase in not only use of cell phones, but also in data transfer.
